Eligibility for the St. Martin de Porres CYO Program
All area youth are invited to participate in basketball at St. Martin's. However, due to size limits of our program, it may be necessary to prioritize acceptance to the program as follows:
Active parishioners of St. Martin de Porres
Inactive parishioners of St. Martin de Porres
Parishioners of neighboring Catholic parishes without basketball programs
Players returning from last year
Players new to the program
Catholic Youth Religious Education Requirement
One of the primary purposes of CYO is the spiritual development of Catholic youth. In keeping with this purpose, all Catholic children wishing to play basketball are required to actively particpate in a religious education program. If a child is enrolled in a religious education program in another parish, a letter from that religious education director confirming enrollment must be received by the St. Martin's Athletic Director by September 30. We cannot accept CYO registrations for Catholic children that are not enrolled in religious education. (Note,This does not apply to the boy's high school league at Gold's Gym.
Children that register for religious education at St. Martin's also must regularly attend classes. Our parish enforces this at annual registration and our parish will enforce this throughout the CYO season. Thus, any excessive, unexcused absences by CYO participants from St. Martin's religious education classes may result in removal from the CYO program until attendance improves and work is made-up.
CYO Travel
Players are selected through tryouts and preference is given to "active" parishioners and students of St. Martin School.
The county rule is that a travel team may have up to 3 non-parishioners.
You must be a registered “active” parishioner of St. Martin for at least one year prior to September to have "active" parishioner status at travel try-outs.
All active parishioners on St. Martin travel teams must be registered for religious education.
You must live within the St. Martin parish boundary.
Exception: If you are an “active” parishioner of St. Martin, but live outside the parish boundary, then we must receive documentation from the parish within that boundary that you are not an “active” parishioner at that parish.
Players can only play intramurals or travel, not both. This includes travel players from other parishes.
